Goblin Wielding Weaponry-Ballpoint on Paper

So this drawing, as you can read in the title, is yet another fantasy thing, but unlike my older drawings, isn't based off an existing piece of art, but straight from my head. Doing drawings this way can be frustrating, and despite what people may think, it is very hard to do compared to simply drawing something from memory or from a picture. It is a tough task to map out all the body parts and gesture and positioning, and even harder to keep sticking to it. For this reason there are hundreds of drawings littering my books that I consider to be bad. Drawing this way makes it easy to lose focus and subsequently produce something that doesn't look like what you wanted, since there isn't anything to base it off of.

That being said, sometimes out of the many failed ones in my sketchbook, some shine and I decide to go along with them. Sticking with a drawing is usually the best thing I can do to make it work, and I definitely feel this way about this drawing.

It just sort of came together nicely, despite having to cover up a portion of his right arm with a shield, which I think is the worst part of the drawing.

The idea the character was based off of was sort of an amalgam of things. It started off as me trying to draw a cool looking helmet, after that I made a nose, and then made it pointy. And then I stuck a menacing eye in there, and decided that it looked like a goblin of some sort from The Lord of the Rings, with this inspiration in mind, I added more and more things, going with the idea, and began fleshing it out more. At this point I consider it a nice little sketch, not my best, but I'm still proud of it and like how it turned out.

As always, if you have any suggestions, critiques, or want to leave something nice to stay on my blog forever, feel free you will only hurt my feelings a little!

BEARDS THO-Ballpoint Pen on Paper

Beards Though!

So as the title suggests, today's post will be dominated by pen drawings of bearded men! Why bearded men you ask? No particular reason really, they are fun to draw, and I think I'm good at it. Since I have run out of previous drawings that I could scan successfully, I decided to draw these a few days ago, in one sitting, and with a common theme. I tried to make them as varied as possible, creating different facial expressions and types of beards for everyone, fun for the whole family! I also attempted to give them each a different character, so that when you first look at them you assume something about them, for that reason I put a strong emphasis on eyes, as they show the most emotion.

My process was fairly simple and fast, I don't commonly draw with pen as opposed to pencil, but lately I have been doing it, as evidenced by my earlier post last week. I started off by making light gesture sketches, placing the body parts where I wanted and working from there into the darker details. If you look closely at the character at the top right section of the page, there is a phantom beard that I decided wasn't good.5. Some got a little carried away in detail compared to others, that being said, I like them all equally. I think i succeeded in what I tried to do, so if you have any advice, feedback or critique, or simply want to compliment, throw me a comment!

Black Pen Monster, Ballpoint on Paper

Pen Day! It Came From Google Images

Notice: Clicking on the picture makes the resolution significantly greater than the preview/thumbnail in the post, so please do that if you want to look at it in greater detail!

So this is a monster that I found on Google images that I found interesting and I decided to draw it, I will do further research to find the actual artist because the description of it was intelligible, and edit that in!

This is black ballpoint pen on regular printer paper, it's in bad condition after being stuffed in my book for so long. This coupled with the odd length of the paper I used made it a difficult task to scan, and so the quality of the picture isn't as good as it could be.

What drew(intended) me to this drawing was the feeling of tension it gives off, the spindly musculature and movement incorporated in the line shading makes gives it the feeling I desired, and I am pretty happy with the outcome! As always, critique and stuff if you want, or just leave any comment really!

Gandalf the Grey, Pencil on Paper

Gandalf the Grey, Portrait

Indeed more Hobbit stuff, but who doesn't like that? This is a very rough sketch I did based on a picture of Gandalf from the Hobbit, with pencil on watercolor paper. Obviously I need to darken the dark's and lighten the lights, but whatever! I enjoy doing sketches like this a lot on a daily basis, not really a full drawing in any sense, it could definitely use more detail and shading, but I thought it was good enough.

Criticism and comments are always welcome here, so leave a comment!

Sketch Day Number 2-Body Parts!

The title is accurate, this week I'm posting the sketches I've done of body parts. Since it will only let me post 3 pictures in X-large size, that's all you get! Today features two different hands, and one page of assorted face things, enjoy!

Disfigured and awkward hand modeled by my own left hand.

A more elegant hand, with creepy nails and stuff.

Different sections of face on one page.

Biblo Baggins- First Sketch

The drawing I've chosen to submit first is this sketch of Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit. It has been hanging in the front of my sketchbook for a while, now and then I choose to add little details and things that I missed, or alter it in some way, but for now I am happy with it.

Clearly, I didn't go for a complete realistic look, especially when you are comparing it to the actual picture, it is a lot different in some ways. I appropriated his stance and other details and then went my own way with it, instead of drawing it from the source completely. I rather went for an almost exaggerated and cartoon-like look for the face, which I think captures his character well. The overall intention was to go for a kind of "older" Bilbo, almost an amalgam of Martin Freeman and his Lord of the Rings counterpart Ian Holm, and his transition into old age.

I am certainly not finished with it, If I ever get around to making any drastic alterations I may make a post in the future as a follow up, but for now I will leave it as it is and move on to other projects!

If you have any criticism I would love to hear it! Thanks!
